Frequently asked

Why only three photos a day?

Because the point is to look at three photos properly, not to scroll. A round takes about a minute and then the app closes until tomorrow. If it went on as long as you liked, it would be a feed, and you already have those.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. They are read on your phone and never leave it. There is no account, no server and no network connection — the app works in aeroplane mode. It also never changes or deletes a photo; it only reads. See our privacy policy.

It gave me a screenshot / a picture of nothing I can date.

Tap Deal another at the top right and you get a different photo. The app already filters out screenshots, scans and saved images, because their date is the day they landed on your phone rather than the day anything happened — but no filter catches everything. Rerolling a photo you simply find hard, though, is only spoiling your own game.

Why do I keep getting old photos instead of recent ones?

On purpose. Anno picks a year first and then a photo inside it, so a picture from 2011 turns up as readily as one from last spring — however many thousands more you took last spring. Picking photos at random would mean playing your busiest few years over and over, and those are the ones you have already seen.

It says there aren't enough photos.

The app needs at least three photographs taken with a camera, with their original capture date intact. A library of screenshots and saved images does not qualify. If you granted access to selected photos only, adding more in iOS Settings → Apps → Anno → Photos will fix it.

Why does it say "80 km from home" instead of naming the place?

Because naming it would mean asking somebody else where you were. The distance is worked out on your phone, from the location your camera already stored in your own photos. No map service is ever contacted.

Can my friends see how I did?

No, and they never will. There is no leaderboard, no friends list and no sharing — and no score to see in the first place. A number would have you playing for it instead of looking at your own people, so the app just tells you how far out you were and leaves it at that.

I missed a day. Have I lost my streak?

Yes, but nothing else. The streak is an invitation, not a debt — the app will not send you a notification about it, and yesterday's photos are not gone, they are back in the library where they always were.

How do I delete what the app knows about me?

Delete the app. Your guesses and streak live only on that phone and go with it. Your photos are untouched, because they were never the app's to begin with.

If it's about memory, why is it called Anno?

Because guessing is how it works, not what it is for. Having to work out a date is what makes somebody look at a photo for thirty seconds instead of swiping past it — and working out when drags the rest of the memory up with it.
